iAngels Israeli Deal Digest – August 2017

Welcome to the iAngels monthly deal digest, a summary of movements in the Israeli startup market.

This August we tracked 24 announced deals totaling $405M, and one massive WeWork round of $4.4B bringing the total amount raised in August to $4.8B. On the M&A side, August was a great month for Israeli companies with  acquisitions for a disclosed $1.54B, including Plarium, a social gaming company that was acquired for $500M and R2Net, a solution for jewelry e-commerce that was acquired for $328M.

Seed Rounds

  • ClanPlay, a messaging app for gamers, has raised a $1M seed round from F2 Capital, MJ Fahmi – Babil Games, and Anton Gauffin – CEO of Huuuge Games.
  • VRHealth, a developer of Virtual Reality environments to enhance physical therapy, has raised a $1.95M round, led by ExitValley.

 

Series A Round

  • Namogoo, a developer of an e-commerce security solution, has raised an $8M round led by GreatPoint Ventures with participation from Blumberg Capital and Inimiti Capital.
  • SpaceIQ, a Facility Management Software, raised a $7M round led by Vertex Ventures, Xplorer Capital, Bullpen Capital, Divergent Ventures and RoundTwo Capital.
  • Karius, a developer of a solution for infectious disease diagnostics, has raised $50M, led by Data Collective (DCVC) and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Tencent and Khosla Ventures. 
  • Healthy.io, a solution for turning smartphone cameras into clinical-grade medical devices, has raised a $12M round led by Quantum Pacific Ventures.
  • Brayola, an e-commerce platform for bras, has raised $2.5M round from The Firstime Fund, Ilan Shiloah, Nir Tralovsky, Jonathan Benartzi, and other private investors.
  • MedAware, a solution for the detection of prescription errors, has raised an $8M round with investments from Becton, Dickinson & Co, Gefen Capital, OurCrowd and Yingcheng City Fubon Technology Co.
  • Amenity Analytics, a developer of a platform for deriving insights from text, has raised $7.6M round led by State of Mind Ventures.
  • Mobility Insight, a developer of a vehicle fleet and transportation management solution, has raised a $3M round led by Champion Capital Group.

 

Series B Rounds

  • GuardiCore, a cyber security company providing network security solutions for software defined data centers, has raised $15M, led by TPG Growth and Greenfield Partners, with participation from Battery Ventures, 83North, Cisco Investments and Dell Technologies.
  • Proov, a proof of concept platform, has raised $14M round led by Helios Capital and Mangrove Capital Partners with participation from OurCrowd and Cerca Partners.
  • Amitree, a tool for real estate agents, has raised a $7M round led by Vertical Venture Partners, with participation from Accel Partners and Seven Peaks Ventures.
  • OryX Vision, a company developing Light Detection and Ranging systems for self-driving vehicles, has raised a $50M round led by Third Point Ventures and WRV.
  • Innoviz, another company developing Light Detection and Ranging system for self-driving vehicles, has raised $65M round led by Delphi Automotive and Magna International, along with other investors
  • Puls (previously CellSavers), an on-demand smartphone and tablet repair service, has raised $25M round led by Red Dot Capital Partners with participation from Samsung next, Maverick ventures, Kreos Capital, Sequoia Capital and Carmel Ventures
  • RescueDose, which has developed a compact robot system for dispensing liquid drugs for injection, has raised a $2.5M round led by ERA Brazil Israel

  • WeWork, a global co-working space giant has raised a massive $4.4B round from SoftBank Group, 
  • PrimaryData, an enterprise metadata engine, has raised $20M round from Pelion Venture Partners, Accel, Battery Ventures and other investors.
  • Eloxx, a company developing therapeutics for genetic diseases, has raised an $8M round led by LSP with participation from Pontifax VC, OPKO Health Inc., Quark, Catalyst, KIP, and additional private investors.
  • Signals Analytics, a system dedicated to driving product portfolio optimization, has raised $8M round led by Pitango Growth with participation by existing investors, Sequoia Capital and Qumra Capital.
  • Happify, a developer of behavioral health applications, has raised $9M round led by T Capital Partners.
  • Mapi Pharma, a developer of lifecycle management pharmaceuticals, has raised a $10M round from aMoon Fund, an Israeli firm founded by Marius Nacht and Dr. Yair Schindel.
  • Redis Labs, a database company that specializes in in-memory databases, has raised $44M round led by Goldman Sachs.
  • ScaleMP, a provider of virtualization solutions facilitating software based computing, has raised a $10M round led by Bank Leumi’s investment banking arm, Leumi Partners Ltd.

 

M&A and IPO

  • Pelarium, a social gaming company, was acquired by Aristocrat, one of the largest manufacturers of gaming solutions and poker machines in the world, for a reported $500M.
  • R2Net, providing solutions to transition bricks and mortar jewelry stores into e-commerce retailers, was acquired by Signet, world’s largest retailer of diamond jewelry, for a reported $328M
  • ZoomInfo, a B2B data platform was acquired by private equity firm Great Hill Partners for a reported $240M.
  • DoubleVerify, a provider of online media verification and campaign effectiveness solutions, was acquired by Providence Equity Partners for a reported $200M.
  • Luminati, a division of hola Networks and an IP proxy network for businesses was acquired by EMK CApital for a reported $200M.
  • DiP-Tech, a provider of solutions for digital printing on glass, was acquired by Ferro, a global supplier of technology-based functional coatings and color solutions, for a reported $80M.
  • Brenmiller Energy, a developer of hybrid energy sources like solar, biomass or any other heat source, for covering electric base load demands, has raised $15M on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE).
  • Vbrand, a developer of an AI platform to measure brand exposure and impact in sports programming, was acquired by Nielsen, a global information, data and measurement company for an undisclosed amount.
  • Streetsmart,  a developer of a decision support system for drivers was acquired by Gett, a global ride sharing app was acquired for an undisclosed amount.
  • Unomy, a developer of sales and marketing intelligence platform, was acquired by WeWork, a global co-working space giant, for an undisclosed amount
  • Applause, a provider of digital experience quality tools, was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, for an undisclosed amount.

This July we tracked 31 announced deals totaling $515M, alongside 10 acquisitions for a disclosed $801M, including 2 major acquisitions in the cyber space –  Skycure that was acquired for $275M, and FireGlass that was acquired for $250M.

4 iAngels investments were also announced including; Applitools, DBmaestro, Way2Vat and Inception VR, together with the exciting acquisition of portfolio company, Nanorep for $45M.

  • Gong.io, a conversation intelligence software for sales teams raised $20M led by Norwest Venture Partners and Shlomo Kramer with the participation from Wing Venture Capital and NextWorld Capital.
  • Intuition Robotics, a company develops social companion technology to impact the lives of older adults, raised $14M round led by Toyota Research Institute (TRI).

  • WalkMe, an interactive online guidance and engagement platform, raised $75M round led by Insight Venture Partners, with participation from other investors.
  • Vroom, an online direct car retailer, raised $76M round led by PICO Venture Partners and with participation from General Catalyst Partners, L. Catterton and other investors.
  • Dynamic Yield,  a company provides personalization, recommendations, 1:1 messaging, and yield optimization across web, mobile, and email, raised $9M round led by DTCP (Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners) and La Maison.

  • NanoRep, a developer of AI-based tools to help people navigate self-service apps, and an iAngels portfolio company, was acquired by LogMeIn, a provider of  connectivity solutions for those who connect remotely to networks and services, for up to $50M
  • Skycure, a provider of mobile security solutions, was acquired by Symantec for a reported $275M.
  • FireGlass, a developer of threat isolation platform that eliminates malware and phishing from web and email, was acquired by Symantec for a reported $250M.
  • IQP, a platform that enables customers to create their own Industrial IoT applications, was acquired by GE for a reported $40M.
  • Cloudyn, a  business management solution, was acquired by Microsoft for an $50M
  • Linkury, a company that offers a complete framework of app monetization solutions was acquired by Algomizer, a public company traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE: ALMO) and specializing in the online marketing field,  for a reported $11M.
  • Emefcy, a developer of energy-efficient wastewater treatment, was merged with RWL Water, for a reported $3M.
  • MRV Communications, a leading worldwide supplier of communications equipment and services, was acquired by ADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV) for a reported $69M.

Welcome to the iAngels monthly deal digest!

With companies such as Houzz (raised $400M) and Cybereason (raised $100M), this was a great month for Israeli startups with 29 announced deals raising $910M in venture capital, alongside 4 acquisitions for a disclosed $80M.

This month we are also closing the first half of 2017, with $2.6B invested in Israeli startups.

H1 2017 investment highlights

  • Since the beginning of 2017, Israeli startups raised around $2.6B, a slightly higher run rate than the $4.8B raised In 2016.
  • A total of $950M,  37% of the total venture capital invested in the first half of 2017, was allocated to growth rounds, reflecting the maturity of the Israeli tech companies.
  • June was an exceptional month with over $900M invested, of which $595M invested in growth rounds in companies such as Houzz ($400M), Cybereason ($100M), Gamida Cell ($40M) and Trax ($32M) – all invested in June.

  • Upstream Security, a cloud-based cyber shield for vehicle’s network, raised $2M round led by Glilot Capital Partners with the participation from Maniv Mobility.
  • GeoQuant, a developer of a platform for political risk management, raised $4M round led by Aleph VC and XL Innovate.
  • Brodmann17, a company developing advanced artificial visual intelligence, raised $1.6M round led by Lool Ventures with participation from Samsung NEXT and Sony Innovation Fund.

  • Robomow, the makers of the robotic residential lawn mower, was acquired by A subsidiary of MTD Products, a developer of industrializes robotic lawn mowers, for a reported $45M.
  • Nextnine, a provider of industrial security management solutions, was acquired by Honeywell International, an American multinational conglomerate, for a reported $35M.

  • Cnogaa manufacturer of non-invasive monitoring devices for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, raised $50m from BOE Technology.
  • Active Implants, a developer of spine implants, raised $40m led by LS Health Science wtih participation from existing investors.
  • Foresight Autonomous, a developer of 3D multi-camera-based Advanced Driver Assitance Systemsraised $11.9m on the TASE from more than 30 private and institutional investors.
  • Autotalks, a developer of vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-pedestrian semiconductors, closed an additional $5m on its $25m round from December, bringing the total to $30m.
  • FreightOS, a sales automation platform for the logistics industry, raised $25m led by GE VEntures with participation from Gold Lion Holdings, Master Toys, and existing investors

M&A

  • AVT, a leading developer of automatic inspection systems for the packing and printing sectors, was acquired by Danaher, a designer and manufacturer of industrial and consumer products, for $107m
  • DigiFlex, a developer of inkjet-based industrial printers, was acquired by PV Nano Cell, a producer of single-crystal, metal nonmetric digital inks, for $10m.
  • Cappsool, an app distribution and discovery platform, was acquired by Natural Intelligence, a performance-based marketing company, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Mobileye, a world leader in Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, was acquired by Intel for a reported $15.3b.

Welcome back to the iAngels monthly deal digest! This January we tracked 19 announced deals totaling $356m, alongside 10 acquisitions for a disclosed $1.1b.

The surge in growth financing continued as we witnessed a newly minted unicorn in Kaminario, while in parallel Kik acquired Rounds and established a new R&D center in Israel.

  • Pagaya, an algorithmic asset manager focused on managing marketplace lending investments, raised $2m from Carmel Ventures.
  • Secret Double Octopusa network traffic protection solution, raised $6m from JVP, Liberty Media, Iris Capital, Benhamou Global Ventures, and Yaniv Tal.
  • Fraugster, an anti-fraud security system powered by AI, raised $5m led by Earlybird, Speedinvest, and Seedcamp.
  • ARTSaVIT, a cancer treatment drug development company, raised $6.3m led by Arkin Bio Ventures with Pontixfax Fund and Merck Ventures.
  • Inovytec, a developer of non-invasive critical care medical devices, raised $3m from Vincent Medical to extend its A round.

  • VisIC technologies, a developer of transistors for OEMs manufacturing electric motor drivers and power suppliers, raised $11.6m from Birch investment and existing investors.
  • Tracx, a social media management suite, raised $12.5m led by Camden Partners with participation by Edison Partners and Tracx CEO Rick Rudman.
  • HealthWatch, a developer of digital textile garments that monitor biometrics, raised $20m from Yiling, a Chinese medical company.

Growth/Miscellaneous Rounds

  • Feedvisora provider of algo-commerce solutions to online retailers, raised $20m led by General Catalyst with participation from existing investors.
  • Corephotonicsa developer of camera imaging technologies for phones, raised $15m led by Samsung Ventures, Foxconn, and Mediatek as well as existing investors.
  • Appsflyer, a global leader in mobile advertising attribution and market data analyticsraised $56m led by Qumra Capital with participation from Goldman Sachs, Magma, Pitango, and Deutsche Telekom.
  • Transmit Security, a mobile security software solution, emerged from stealth to announce $40m from Michael Boodaei, Rakensh Loonkar, and private investors.
  • Sentinel Onean endpoint security software aiming to replace traditional antivirus vendors, raised a $70m round led by Redpoint Ventures alongside Sound Ventures and existing investors.
  • Kaminario, an all-flash storage company redefining modern data centers, raised $75m led by Waterwood group and joined by Sequoia, Pitango, Lazarus, Silicon Valley Bank, and Globespan Capital Partners.

M&A

  • Mentad, a predictive marketing technology for online retailers, was acquired by Socialcode, a social advertising insights company , for an undisclosed sum.
  • Tyrnovo, a cancer drug development company, was acquired Kitov, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company for $3.8m.
  • Abbi, an in-app marketing solution for mobile publishers, was acquired by Israeli start-up WalkMe, an enterprise user experience solution, for $2m.
  • SimpliVity, a virtualization solution for IT departments, was acquired by Hewlett Packard’s Enterprise division, HPE, for $650m.
  • Flok, a customer rewards platform,  a provider of data center infrastructure management tools, was acquired by Wix, a leading cloud-based web development platform, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Valtecha medical device company focused on cardiac complications, was acquired by Edwards Lifesciences, the world leader in artificial heart valves, for $340m. This deal was announced in November, but resurfaced in January.
  • Lithotech, a world leader in the production and development of invasive devices, was acquired by Vention Medical, a medical device manufacturing company, for $2.6m.
  • Rounds, an instant group video chat app, was acquired by Kik, a global messaging application, for $70m. Kik will open up an R&D center in Israel.

  • Knowmailan intelligent email management solution, raised $3.5m led by CE Ventures, with participation from existing investors.
  • SecDo, a cybersecurity incident response solution, raised $6m in a round led by RDC, subsidiary of Elron, with participation from Rafael and Checkpoint co-founder and chairman Marius Nacht.
  • Gordian Surgical, a laparoscopic surgery closure device, raised $2.25m in a round led by B.Braun with participation from VI Ventures and private investors.
  • Breezometer, a leading provider of air quality analytics, raised a $3m round led by Phi Square Ventures with participation from SeedIL, Entree Capital, and Liron Rose.
  • Hippo Insurance, an insurtech start-up focused on homeowners, raised a $14m party round led by Horizons Ventures with participation from GGV Capital and 10 other investors.
  • RoutePerfect, an online trip planning tool that helps travelers create a custom itinerary, raised $2m from Cyrus Angel Fund, Elevator Ventures, GlenRock, AltaIR Capital, and Meir Caspi.
  • xPlenty, a platform enabling SMBs to read and process data from relational databases, raised $4m in a round that included Bain Capital, Rembrandt Ventures, True Ventures, and existing investors. This round enabled xPlenty to acquire Driven, a big data application infrastructure.
  • DIR Technologies, a developer of thermography based inspection for pharmaceutial quality assurance, raised $10m from Pfizer Venture Capital.

Series B Rounds

  • After extending its seed round by $14m in August, Lemonadethe on-demand home and renter insurance platform turned on the juice in December, announcing a $33m round led by General Catalyst with participation from Thrive Capital, GV, and existing investors.
  • Beamr, a provider of encoding and optimization solutions for streaming video providers, extended its Series B round this December, taking another $4m from Verizon Ventures.
  • Evercompliant, a cyberintelligence solution helping acquiring bansk and payment service providers to manage merchant-based fraud, raised $9.5m led by Arbor Ventures with participation from Carmel, Nyca, and Star Farm Ventures
  • RedHill, a drug development company focused on inflammatory and gastrointestinal diseases, raised $15m in a PIPE from Emc2 Fund.

Growth/Miscellaneous Rounds

  • Lumusa developer of optical imaging technology enabling augmented and mixed reality, extended its $15m D round by $30m led by Quanta Computer with participation from HTC and existing investors.
  • Housepartya group video chat app, pulled in a $52m slug led by Sequoia, with participation from Greylock, Comcast Ventures, and Aleph.
  • Bluevine, an invoice financing company focused on SMBs, raised $49m in a round led by Lightspeed with participation from Citi, Greylock, Rakuten, Menlo, and others. This brings its 2016 total to $94m!
  • Nova Lumos, an on-demand solar energy company providing affordable energy to off-grid homes in Africa, raised $40m in equity led by Pembani Remgro with participation from Schneider Electric, and ICV, as well as $50m in venture lending from OPIC.
  • OrthoSpace, a medical device used to treat rotator cuff injuries, raised $7m in a round led by Johnson and Johnson with participation from existing investors.
  • Neovasc, a medical device company addressing cardiovascular disease and complications , raised $75m in a PIPE from Boston Scientific.

M&A

  • HearMeOut, a social audio platform, raised $5m on the ASX.
  • Hanita Coatings, a developer and manufacturer of coating materials, was acquired by Avery Dennison, a leading in global packaging for $75m.
  • Cronologics, a smartwatch OS platform started by ex-Googlers, was acquired by Google for an undisclosed amount.
  • Framez, an online platform for managing video products, was acquired by Israeli start-up LookAt, which is developing a platform to discuss videos in production, for an undisclosed amount.
  • Cimagine, a developer of a mobile AR platform for home and office goods, was acquired by Snapchat, for $35m and will now establish an R&D center in Israel.
  • Hexatier, a cloud database security and compliance solution, was acquired by Huawei for $42m.
  • RiT technologies, a provider of data center infrastructure management tools, was acquired by YOFC, the world’s largest fiber optic company, in a deal worth about $1m.

iAngels Deal Digest – October Monthly Wrap Up

Greetings from Tel Aviv and welcome to another monthly wrap up and Happy Halloween! October was a special month in Israel, as we celebrated Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. With such a preponderance of holidays one might think that deal volume might suffer due to the stop and start nature of each week… and one would be correct!

This month there were only 8 venture investments announced for $234m, alongside $75m in disclosed M&A. Time to dig a bit deeper!

October saw relatively slow acquisition activity, highlighted by Proofpoint’s $55m acquisition of FireLayers.

  • Corrigon, a digital content tracking and analysis engine, was acquired by eBay, for $20m.
  • Kampyle, a customer feedback management platform, was acquired by Medallia, a SaaS customer experience management software vendor backed by Sequoia, for an undisclosed sum. 
  • FortyClouda cloud infrastructure security solution, was acquired by FireMon, a leader in network security policy management, for an undisclosed sum. .
  • FireLayers, a security platform enabling the responsible adoption of cloud applications, was acquired by Proofpoint,  one of the largest independent software companies in the world, for $55m.

October also saw light investment activity, highlighted by Payoneer’s $180m Series E.

Seed Rounds

  • NewsTaba cloud services provider to small businesses that also aggregates news for consumers, raised $1.5m from Paul Maritz (previous CEO of VMWare) and Eyal Levy (previous CEO of Pelephone).

Series A Rounds

  • SimpleOrdera SaaS platform bridging the gap between supply chain buyers and sellers in the food and beverage industry, raised $2.75m from Lazarus, Foodlab Capital, and Cyrus Angel Fund.
  • Chorus.ai, a data analytics platform using AI and NLP to help increase sales performance, raised $6.3m from Emergence Capital.

Series B Rounds

  • Oryx Visiona company building a depth-sensor system for the connected card, raised $17m from Bessemer, with participation from Maniv Mobility, and Trucks Venture Capital.
  • PointGrab. a company converting visual signals from light installations into actionable, cost-saving analytics, raised $7m from Mitsubishi, Philips Lighting, EcoMachines Ventures, and ABB Technology Ventures.
  • Gauzy, a developer and manufacturer of liquid crystal glass-based applications , raised $7m from Lazarus, Olive Tree, and Waarde Capital.

Growth/Miscellaneous Rounds

  • Wochita social video creation platform, raised $13m from Seven Ventures, ProSieben, SPH Media Fund, and existing investors Redpoint, Marker LLC, Cedar Ventures.

Greetings from Tel Aviv and welcome to another monthly wrap up! It’s been now a full quarter since starting the iAngels deal digest, and over time I’ve learned that a mid-month and end-of-month digest is more meaningful, manageable, and informative than a weekly update. So from now on you can expect an update twice a month.

On the heels of August’s $415m of new capital, September brought $377m of investment, with Security and Safety Technologies (36%), Social Media and Advertising (18%), and Enterprise Solutions (17%) leading the way, alongside $95m in disclosed M&A (total M&A was higher).

September witnessed light acquisition activity, with one company acquired for a disclosed $95m and four companies acquired for undisclosed amounts.

  • Crossense a company helping advertisers and market researchers better understand their audiences, was acquired by Toluna, a survey software firm, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Wiser, a pricing strategy and analytics application, was acquired by Quad Analytix, a leading player in competitive intelligence solutions, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Imagu Vision Technologiesa provider of software that recognizes objects in digital images and video, was acquired by iCarbonX, a Chinese unicorn focused on big data medical analytics, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Blazemeter, a software platform simplifying continuous testing, was acquired by CA Technologies,  one of the largest independent software companies in the world, for $95m.
  • WatchMe88, a social discovery application for the Apple Watch and iPhone, was acquired by ChampagneSG, a Singaporean dating agency, for an undisclosed sum.

The past two weeks, another $60m was invested in Israeli start-ups.

  • OMGWhen, a mobile discovery platform for activities, raised $2m from a syndicate of private investors.
  • Curve, a payment method provider that aggregates numerous payment methods into a single plastic card, raised $2.6m from Connect Ventures, Samos Investments, and private investors.
  • Quicargo, a mobile and web platform that connects carriers to shippers to maximize use of extra loading space, raised $500,000 from Bootcamp Ventures, Ignite Accelerator, and Money Train IL.
  • uChange, an application that enables travelers to find each other and exchange money at low rates, raised $500,000 from private investors.
  • Pixoneye, an adtech company profiling consumers based on their photo and video libraries , raised $3.1m from Telefonica Ventures, Seedrs, and HBS Angels of London.
  • Karamba Security, a software company focused on securing automtive controllers and IoT devices, raised $2.5m from Fontinalis Partners, GlenRock, and YL Ventures.
  • NewSight Imaging, a company developing a camera chip for medical devices, raised $500,000 from EnnoVenture and private investors.

Series A Rounds

  • Codefresh, an end-to-end contain lifecycle management platform, raised $7m from Carmel, Hillsven, and Streamlined Ventures.
  • Folloze, a prospect engagement platform for marketers, raised $7.3m from NEA, Cervin Ventures, and private investors.

  • Aqua Security, a provider of container security solutions to the enterprise, raised $9m from Microsoft Ventures, Shlomo Kramer, and other private investors.
